Technology in Theological Education

In March 2008, ATS sponsored a workshop for persons identified by their institution whose work included what was broadly defined as educational technology. The Technology in Theological Education Group (TTEG), born at that workshop, aims to facilitate the development of teaching and learning environments that use communicative media. A steering committee operates on behalf of the group. Read a more detailed history.

Six goals guide the work of the TTEG:

  • to facilitate interaction and collaboration
  • to provide knowledge of available technical tools and learning theory models for enhanced instruction
  • to provide tools to support online literacy to students and alumni for academic and pastoral growth
  • to support research and publication
  • to share projects and exemplary practices
  • to offer insights to the ATS Commission on Accrediting

While organizations already exist that are dedicated to technology in the classroom, course design, and best practices in all aspects of education, our collective experience in theological education and information technology makes us uniquely qualified to serve ATS member schools.

Membership is open to persons affiliated with ATS member schools and to organizations with affiliate status.

Online Conference

The ATS Technology in Theological Education group held its first annual online conference on May 20, 2009. With the theme of Ministerial and Spiritual Formation in Cyberspace, the conference provided an opportunity to join educational technologists, faculty, academic administrators, librarians, and other theological educators in an engaging discussion of this emerging topic.

Keynote speaker Gregory Bourgond addressed aspects of spiritual formation and whether they can be accomplished in an online medium. Following the presentation, there was time for questions and answers.
