Tisa Lewis joined the ATS staff in August 2005 from Montreat College (North Carolina), where she had served on the faculty since 1987 as professor of human development and Christian education and chair of the Social Science Department.

A graduate of the University of South Carolina, she holds an MA and PhD in Christian Education from The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, Kentucky. Her dissertation addressed “Gender Differences in Religious Conceptualization and Experience.” In addition to her studies at Southern Seminary, she has also studied at the University of Louisville in the areas of gender and developmental psychology, George Fox College in the area of women and psychotherapy, and Oregon State University in women and spirituality.

At Montreat, her courses have included Foundations of Christian Education, Educational Psychology, the Philosophy of Faith and Learning, and the Psychology of Spirituality, among others. She also developed a senior-level course titled Faith Development that is required for religion majors in Christian education and human services majors. Students’ final presentations in the course center on their personal faith journeys. Her book, Faith Influences: Gospel Responsibilities in a Changing World (Birmingham: Woman’s Missionary Union, 2000), developed largely out of the course.

Among her other publications, she is co-author with Mina Carson and Susan Shaw of Girls Rock! Fifty Years of Women Making Music—a book about women and rock 'n' roll. The book began as a documentary film project of interviews with women musicians and vocalists. When the University Press of Kentucky expressed interest in their work, the film project became a three-year book project, with publication in 2004.

She resides in Sewickley, Pennsylvania.
