We’re looking for a Controller to lead our daily financial and business operations, oversee our building and other assets, and steward our resources well.

  • Job Type: Full Time
  • Education: 4-Year Degree Required, Degree in Accounting or Finance is preferred. A CPA with nonprofit accounting and auditing experience is highly desired.
  • Experience Level: Associate Director-level - Minimum of 7 years of relevant financial and administrative experience in a nonprofit or higher education setting

Controller

About the Role

As the Controller, you’ll be the cornerstone of our Business Office, overseeing financial records and business transactions, managing payroll and benefits, supervising the audit process, and ensuring our facilities run smoothly. You’ll work closely with senior leadership to support financial grant reports, support the audit and finance committees, and ensure financial integrity across all operations. The Controller serves both the Association of Theological Schools (ATS) and the Commission on Accrediting (COA), which are separate 501c3 organizations, through a single business office.

Key Responsibilities

  1. Manage the daily financial operations and ensure accuracy, timeliness, and completeness of financial statements. Safeguard assets by maintaining proper internal control systems.
  2. Complete monthly closings and prepare internal financial reports for ATS & COA.
  3. Oversee cash flow projections, execute investment plan, and prepare monthly investment reporting in collaboration with the Senior Director & COO.
  4. Administer payroll and benefits by executing three monthly payrolls, working with insurance brokers, and implementing strategies of senior leadership. Ensure compliance with payroll and employment laws in a variety of states.
  5. Manage legal agreements with subcontractors, including ensuring certifying that contracts are properly executed and required tax reporting is maintained.
  6. Maintain physical facilities of the ATS office building by working with maintenance, cleaning, grounds, and construction contractors to preserve the quality.
  7. Serve as liaison to ATS & COA Audit and Finance Committees and manage annual audits.

What We’re Looking For

  1. Degree in Accounting or Finance (CPA preferred).
  2. Minimum 7 years of financial and administrative experience, ideally at least 3 years in a nonprofit setting.
  3. Mission-oriented mentality dedicated to faithful stewardship of ATS & COA resources
  4. Demonstrated proactive, “can-do” attitude with a strong ability to execute tasks and follow through on responsibilities
  5. Self-motivated and tenacious problem solver compelled by service excellence
  6. Accounting professional who is enthusiastic about precision, timeliness, and completeness of financial transactions and statements
  7. Ability to provide accounting services as detailed in ATS/COA service agreement
  8. Proficient in QuickBooks and Microsoft Office Suite
  9. Excellent collaboration, customer service and communication skills
  10.  Thorough understanding of generally accepted accounting principles, auditing practices, and business policies
